Much was said about United's attacking front after the departure of Ronaldo and Tevez. While Ronaldo's ability to kill off small teams is greatly missed, I can hardly say the same for Tevez. While United misses his incredible work rate and commited play every single game, Valencia seems to be improving at a steady pace with each passing game.

Put both players' current statistic together and you will get:-

This morning, even the most delusional Liverpool fan woke up to the fact that the team is indeed headed no where this season.

Liverpool 1 - 0 Debrecen
Fiorentina 1 - 0 Lyon

As it takes a moment for most to digest the result over a cup of teh tarik or nescafe, the long sigh from Benitez could almost be heard all the way from Hungary. For the first time in six season under his charge, Liverpool failed to qualify to the knockout stage of Champions League. While he is frustrated to say the least, I wouldn't say that he couldn't see this coming. Several near misses including Liverpool's one-off exception qualification to the Champions League 2005-06 even though they ended up fifth in the league, by virtue of being the 2004-05 champion.

As, Rafa adjust his GPS - changing course from Madrid to Hamburg, he is left to ponder - if Liverpool was ever meant to play in Europa Cup with the likes of Everton, Benfica and Valencia. The true damage to Liverpool will be the failure to qualify for next year's Champions League. With the likes of Spurs, City and Villa all hovering above them, it might soon become a task too far..

Watch out guys! If you're watching the Champions League qualifier tonight - you're in for a treat - apparently. Rafa Benitez 'insist' that his Liverpool side is ready to amaze Europe again with an unlikely Champions League knockout stage qualification.

Well his words are not without credit actually: Liverpool is a team that lives on miracle after all - two years back when they miraculously survived to the knockout stage, whacking Porto, Besiktas and Marseille along the way - and of course, which Liverpool fan will allow you to forget their 0-3 come back against AC Milan to win the Champion's League in 2005.

Any difference now and then? YES

For starters, this guy isn't playing:

Fiorentina only need one point from the match against Lyon to dash Liverpool's hope. And this man is on a mission to make sure that this happens:

Adrian Mutu

Yes, thats right boys and girls - Adrian Mutu is back to wipe that grin off all those English fans that mocked him during his scandalous stay with Chelsea. At one point fans were even laughing at the report where he was in the sack with four ladies - but didn't impress any of them! Now back with the big boys and despite a difficult elbow injury, Mutu managed to finish the 2008-2009 season with 14 goals, along with Gilardino they were one of the top ten single season striker partnerships in Viola history with 33 goals between them.

My money is on him - finishing of Liverpool's faint hopes. What do you think?

Hand of Henry

Once again the world of football is in the middle of another uproar - this time its because of "Hand of Henry" at work. Thierry Henry's handling of the ball during Ireland vs France's World Cup Qualifier 2nd leg playoff, allowed his team mate - William Gallas, to score the goal that took France to World Cup Finals.

In all honesty, I sympathise with Henry. Yes, he did handle the ball. He has admitted to it, and even asked for a replay as a fair resolution to the matter. What else do you want from him? He is right actually - saying that he is not the referee, and that it was the referee's responsibility to stop the game and disallow the goal.

But all this commotion is part of the game - the more publicity the better. FIFA knows very well, that part of what makes the game exciting is questionable decisions or human error in refereeing. In the end - the longer you stay in the game, you'll realise that the theory of equilibrium may bring justice to you.. eventually. You win some, you lose some - that's the name of the game. What do you think?

A shift in power

The Barclay's English Premier League is going through an exciting phase in its 17th year of existence. As the world's most watched sporting league, and the strongest national league for 2 consecutive years in a row (2007 & 2008), the balance of power is finally being more equally distributed - breaking the traditional 'Big Four' dominance.

At first glance, you may be forgiven for thinking that its business as usual - as all (well, with Liverpool as an exception) the big names are occupying the top 3 spots. A close look will reveal how close these teams are from the rest of the chasing pack. Arsenal with 22 points could go above United if they win the next game (having played only 10 games and with superior goal difference) and City could potentially make it 22 points - having played 1 game less as well. Villa could also move into 5th if they win the next one - having 18 points and having played 1 less as well.

Interesting enough - all top 3 teams have lost twice so far with 11 games played. Gone are the days where title contenders run away with a clear cut lead after playing only 1/3 of the season. All top teams have been going through a tough time so far:-

Chelsea - Woeful away form (2 away losses) and slapped with 2 transfer window ban. Better hope no one gets injured.

United - Lack of creativity in attack and midfield. Hopefully for United, all the rumors of capturing David Silva and David Villa will come through good. Scrapping through 1-0 wins may not be good enough at times - like what the Gaffa always say - At the end of the day, it may come down to goal difference. Right now their 12 is a pale comparison against Arsenal's 19 and Chelsea's 20.

Arsenal - Inexperienced young Gunners tend to collapse towards the end of the season. Games like the one against West Ham are tell tale signs. That being said - when they thump teams, they really do it in style!

Manchester City - Showed promising signs defeating the likes of Arsenal. Like Liverpool, they rise to big occasions, but play poorly against mid table teams. Looking at their performance against Birmingham - Hughes has a lot to do for the remaining season.

Liverpool - Most likely to drop out of the top 4 position. Rafa has got to make up his mind. With a squad like theirs (Lucas & Voronin - need I say more), competing on all fronts for honours, is an impossible task. Now staring at Champion's League exit and with Gerrard possibly out until December - League title should be a foregone conclusion by then.

With a WAG like that, it is no wonder Stevie G's groin injury is so serious..

Consistency - as in the past and now as important as ever - will be the key to winning the Premier League this season.

Recently the Premier League hosted a series of 'childish' and 'immature' acts by so called professional multi-millionaire footballers.

First this fella run down the entire length of the pitch to celebrate in front of Arsenal fans. Claims that they were abusing him.

Just look at that fella's face - feel like slapping him

Then this fella started rambling about how United fans have been unkind to him and how United refuse to pay £30m to buy him.

Tevez - needing a pacifier to shut him up

Then comes this fella who is trying to pretend to be Mr. Nice Guy by not celebrating his goal which led to the 1-1 draw with Manchester City. But Mark Hughes said "It'll be nice if he doesn't score against us". Can you do that Mr. Nice Guy?

For crying out loud - Time to act like a professional. Some pointers for the millionaires:-

a. It's ok for you to celebrate your goal. After all if you scored, you deserved it - just don't do it in front of the opposition fans!

b. What do you expect if you leave one club to join another fierce rival? That your old club's fans kiss your feet still when you walk into the pitch? Common - grow up. Let's keep it real.

c. Don't burn bridges - ask any juniors in the working world and you would know this general concept. You never know when you will need another person's help.

d. If you want to be Mr. Nice Guy - try to allow others to see your good deed by themselves. That way it look way less fake.

Think I've seen this tit-for-tat behaviour before, wait hang on - I think it was in the kindergarten. Please grow up - 'Professional Footballers'.

Recently the Malaysian Government has outdone themselves again with the announcement of the 1Malaysia F1 team. In a world full of economic and financial turmoil - where giants such as EU, Japan and America are trying to recover, we somehow manage to find RM1.8 billion (USD500m) to join a sport so lavish that even the likes of Honda and BMW have taken prudent steps to withdraw.

Help me, I am trying to be optimistic. I love and want to support my Government badly, but as a concerned citizen, I have to ask - Is this the right time for this sort of venture? Our participation comes at a time, where we are technically in recession - going through 2Qs of negative growth for 1st and 2nd Q of 2009.

You may argue that it is also in part a privately funded team - with AirAsia, Proton, Naza and Petronas coming in. With the exception of AirAsia, please do remember that the money from these companies comes indirectly from the government too. Proton with Government's 20 years tax protection in the car industry, Naza from the thousands of APs gifted to them by Rafidah Aziz and Petronas from the oil rights given by the government.

The funny thing you may ask on the Government's part of the money - where to find the millions needed to fund the F1 team when it's not even allocated in the 2009 budget? One theory could be the reduction of petrol quality in Malaysia. Many Malaysians don't realise it but the usual RON97 that you have been enjoying has been downgraded to RON95 but the RM1.80 per litre price tag still applies! BRILLIANT! That way, no protest, no anti-gov sentiment but still can find the money to pay for the F1 team! On top of that, I see adds on the newspaper brainwashing the public that using RON95 has made their car more powerful - gosh - how stupid and blind can we be.

There's a fine line between being patriotic and supporting the government blindly - lets not cross it.

England demolished Croatia to book their spot in the World Cup Finals. What's even more impressive is the manner they qualified. 100% record of wins making them the only team in Europe to do that.

I dunno how Roger Federer felt when he got his 15th Grand Slam last Sunday, as he just became the most successful man in the tennis world, but it must be awesome la!
He beat all the other tennis greats before him.and I mean ALL!

I had the luxury to watch the Wimbledon final all the way since my exams was over! Teehee!
and I underestimated the match!
I actually thought that Federer would wrap the game up in four sets, but who knew that Roddick played such an awesome game till 16-14 in the 5th set?!

To be honest, Roddick should have won! Oh wells, sports is cruel!
But you gotta give it to Roger, he's just a legend!!!

Since now he has won everything he can in the tennis world, he should give chance to other tennis players! Lol.

Eugene, you're right - its official - Ronaldo is officially allowed to negotiate terms with Real Madrid and will become a Real Madrid player at the end of June. £80m is the price - making his transfer the most expensive in the world right now. Few FAQs for this whole saga:

1. How in the world does Real Madrid come up with such ridiculous amount of cash to purchase ONE player?

Answer:

a. Real Madrid is the world's richest football club (€366m) in terms of revenue.

b. Apparently they sold a big part of their training ground to the city of Madrid in 2001 for a huge amount of money and later sold the rest to giant corporations to wipe out their debts of €270m.

c. Most valuable football brand in Europe - Only club where both executives and players are well known.

d. Completed an image rights deal with Adidas worth 762 million in 2007.

e. Second most valuable footbal club in the planet right now £640 m - Beaten only by Manchester United - £906m (Glory glory Man United)

2. Who got the better side of the deal?

Answer:

United. Its like paying M3 price to get a regular 3 series - Good car but overpriced.

3. What now for United?

Answer:

A replacement is eminent. United will be looking at a striker now for around the region of £20m.

4. Should the money from the sale of Ronaldo be used to settle Tevez's position?

World Cup Qualifiers

Sometimes you've got to wonder, if its worth playing when time after time you get thrashed by heavy weights like England. That thought must be running through every Andorran's mind when they watch their team get mauled by England 6 goals to nil. The Andorrans were long gone and buried by the first half with 3 goals - 2 from Rooney and 1 from Lampard. Second half goals from Jermain Defoe (2) and Peter Crouch (1) were just formalities in completing the rout.

Funny story elsewhere - New Zealand nearly defeated Italy in a friendly - hahaha. From the makers of Fern Leaf milk and butter - they very nearly whacked the complacent world champions, but eventually succumbed to a 3-4 defeat.

New Zealand's team looks good too - continuing their tradition wearing all black.

Elsewhere - What is happening to Argentina? Stars like Messi, Tevez and Heinze failed to lift their side as they slumped to their second defeat in a row after losing 6-1 to Bolivia in April.

Ecuador scored twice late in the second half to whack Argentina 2-0. A case of unable to play well in high altitude?

Check this out - when Gareth Barry exits Villa to join City, he was branded a mercenary. When Kaka leaves AC for Real, he's a hero and will be cherished for all his contributions. Can't contain my laughter. Do you know what is the difference? - CLASS

Barry immediately issued a letter to explain all his reasons for leaving - but that backfired as the fans viewed the immediate issuance of a letter of apology as an impression that Barry was guilty. Kaka did it differently - he held a press conference and the press wrote "Kaka joins Madrid for £59m to help AC Milan" - What a noble title!

World no1 without Grand Slam - again!

Dinara Safina and Jelena Jankovic have yet to prove critics wrong - World no1, but no GrandSlam!

The Roland Garros aka French Open 2009 Women Singles Finals had just ended a couple hours back and 7th seed Svetlana Kunetsova is crowned champion !!!!

So, once again. No Grand Slam title. According to RolandGarros official website, it was the nerves and confidence that prevented her to win. Unlike her matches from the 1st round all the way to the semi-finals, she was defeated in just two sets 6-4, 6-2.

Her cause of defeat : She didn believe she could win it!

I mean, in her previous Grand Slam final appearances, she lost with such big margin that I believe broke her confidence. Her past haunted her and it cost her the title!

I rooted for Safina all the way bcuz I wanted her to win at least ONE Grand Slam so she can silence her critics, but sighhh..
It's ok, Safina. Wimbledon my dear, Wimbledon!

Just like Safina, I'm rooting for Federer all the way!!! Even in my previous post, I really want Federer to win this bcuz he has got everything in his career BUT this! So yea, go Federer!

Federer is desperate for that one elusive title - French Open. Three times in the final (2006, 2007 & 2008) and three times the agony as Nadal demonstrates his class on clay court finals. This time, with Nadal crashing out in the fourth round, could this be the year? Enter Robin Soderling - 23 seed - world #15. The only Swede currently to be ranked inside the ATP top 100 - Sweden's next generation since the great Bjorn Borg and the more recent Stefan Edberg. He defeated Nadal in 4 sets - ending Nadal's 4 year winning streak - 48-0 record, in Roland Garros.

Can we expect an epic battle similar to that of Nadal-Federer, or is the chap from Tibro going to bow in awe to Swiss superiority? Judging from his performance against Fernando Gonzalez, it ain't no fluke victory against Nadal. Greatness beckons.

Looks like its going to be another season of empty promises from Liverpool. This time even before the season starts, signs of another empty season is all but showing. Liverpool's holding company - Kop Football (Holdings) Ltd announced a substantial lost of £42.6m although the football club itself made a meagre £10.2m profit. Club accountants (KPMG) filed warning notes in their statement of accounts - indicating 'going concern', as the owners Hicks and Gillett (pics above) struggles to refinance £350m worth of debt before the June 24 deadline. Hicks already defaulted the loan he took to finance his American baseball team - Texas Rangers.

So what will happen if the creditors take over. First, they will appoint an accounting firm to act as receiver. Second, when the appointed receiver is in, they will start looking for valuable assets to sell in order for the club to repay its debt. So, what's valuable in Liverpool Football Club? Certainly not its trophy cabinet! Torres and Gerrard? Yeah you're right! These stars will probably be offloaded if and only if the owners cannot do anything about it.

So, Gareth Barry becomes the second star player to join Manchester City - the other one being Robinho (all else considered insignificant signings for City haha). The thing I like bout this guy is the way he handled his tranfer. Right after he signed a £100k-a-week deal with City, he immediately wrote a letter of apology to his fans - probably afraid that they might hurl rocks into his direction. The letter is damn good man! So cleverly hides his love for moolah. There's no shame Barry, just admit it - you're 28, getting older, and just want more moolah before you retire. Don't treat your fans like kids and give the crap about wanting new challenge. This guy told everyone that he wanted champion's league football - that's why he almost left for Liverpool. Now that City doesn't even have Europa Cup football, he starts singing to a different tune - saying he wants challenge - bla bla bla.

Common, don't treat people like kids. Everyone knows its about the money - so just say it. You should be brave enough to admit it - and guess what - everyone else would have done it as well.
The shame is when you're trying to hide it!

New man in-charge

Chelsea announced their new manager today and it came as a surprise to me. Not because I didn't know that Carlo Ancelotti was going to be their manager but the fact that Roman Abramovich hired him after the things he revealed in his biography about their meeting! Describing the scene of their meeting (Ancelotti and Abramovich) to the likes of meeting a hitman - isn't exactly the way to impress your future employer. But he got the job anyway! Which leads me to believe that maybe Kaka is on the way to Chelsea? What do you think?

I set my alarm to 2.30am and actually woke up to see Thursday morning's Champion's League final. After which couldn't sleep and was left in drowsy state when meeting my clients for the rest of the day - sigh. Depressed and sleepy - what a combination.

Few things I've observed:

1. Barca was the better team that night. United's effort, however valiant we might want to think it is, fell short.

2. Ferguson is a gracious in defeat - Something for Liverpool's manager to note. He said and I quote - "In fairness we were beaten by the best team. We weren't at our best. The first goal was a killer, it was a bad start to the game. If you give them the ball they will keep it all night." - http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=650241&cc=4716 . Now that's class ok.

3. United's defence - something that was the cornerstone for United's success so far - wasn't effective for the game.

4. United should take heart knowing that this season was a fantastic one - regardless of the outcome of last night's game. English premier league champions, Carling Cup winner and Club World Cup winner. Something that most EPL pretenders have not achieved since the formation of the Premier League (I think we all know who).

Before I end my post, I would like to note that strangely - I feel sorry for Newcastle United's Manager - Alan Shearer. The day Newcastle was relegated, Shearer said -

''I spoke to them (the players) in the dressing room and said 'you can make all the excuses you like."

''But I wasn't good enough, Mike Ashley is not good enough, the same with Chris Hughton, Kevin Keegan, Joe Kinnear (who have all managed Newcastle this season), people in the dressing room, all of us."

This is the mark of a great manager in the making. He first shoulder the blame - admitting that he wasn't good enough - often making you feel so sorry for him although he tookover when the club was already in dire straits. Maybe and just maybe, with him in-charge of the club next season, and given a free hand to manage Newcastle - they might just be able to climb back up to top flite football again. As for now, Scunthorpe United awaits..

BARCELONA - UEFA Champs 08/09!

I think the rest of the SportsMate team are too depressed to write about this, EXCEPT me!
Hahaha..

But everyone in the world, including the ManU manager, players and the fans agree that this win was a very well-deserved one by Barca.
They dominated the entire match, their passings were accurate, their midfielders were so strong and the goals were just perfect! =)

ManU started out strong. Had pretty good chances in fact. With the free kick and such.
Barca didn even have one.
and that very first shot they have was converted to a goal by Samuel Eto'

and *that goal* broke ManU's confidence and the rest were history.
ManU barely had possesion, and when they finally got it, they could barely pass the midfield.
They were simply outclassed!

Barca's way of playing is way way different compared to the EPL's style.
For a while, I was getting so restless and bored bcuz of the continous passing and slow attack.
But that's how the Spanish teams play.

and it was amazing! I might just probably watch more of LaLiga matches now! =D

Barca had a total of 12 shots, with 7 shots on target.
and one that was completely awesome - Lionel Messi's goal!

They only had ONE (1) person - Messi in the penalty box and they just need the very one to score the goal!
It was such an awesome header!

Credits to VanDerSar too, not bcuz of Him, I think ManU would be down by 3-4 goals.
Xavi and Iniesta were just too good!

There was this particular attempt by Barca that I loved so much.
Their tactic was something like Iniesta passing to Eto, then he passed back to Iniesta and he passed the ball to the right with Puyol running towards the front to shoot a attempt.
It was close!
It would be the best goal if it went behind the net!! Hahaha...

Btw, Messi is like the total opposite of Ronaldo. Unlike Ronaldo, Messie doesnt dive when defenders get near him. Instead, when he fell down with two other ManU players, he just got up and STILL HOLD POSSESSION OF THE BALL and just keep running!
How awesome is that!

Barcelona - You truly deserve to hold the trophy once again! Well-deserved victory!
Congrats on getting your treble in Spain! It's undeniably the best team on earth as of now! =)

p.s. At least you humbled ManU!! So much for the greatest team on earth and being the undestructable! One team just beat you! Hahaha. Always remember that there will be someone greater than you! Everyone hates ManU so much that they support Barca!

I walked in to the library today and saw 4 of my friends talking in group. Obviously, one of them saw me and the first thing he asked me was..

Are you going to be there this Thursday?
Here in Adelaide, the live telecast starts at 4am. So he was wondering whether I would sacrifice my precious sleep just to watch this game. Of course man!!
This game is our last game of the season. And what a wonderful season we are having!!
Its a massive game for us and also for all football fans out there.

Later, leaving them behind i searched for a computer. What a irony, another MU fan was sitting in front of me. He asked the same thing as well. But with different accent and words since he is from Thailand. He is a Punjabi. Well I am not trying to be racist here since he like to call me the Indian friend.

The point is, this game is so big and being anticipated by a lot of people out there. Football is like the mother of all games in Malaysia. Same goes with other countries like Thailand, England and other Asian countries.

But this is so different compare to America and Australia. They prefer American football and for Australian would be their footy.

Wherever you are, please do not miss out this game. I am a Manchester United supporter. But i am not asking you to watch because of that. Its a great game with 2 big giants are clashing. If you ask me what would be the game of the season, this would be.

Who will win? Well this depends on who you ask. Barcelona looks stronger but without most of their defenders, it going to be a tight game.
Manchester United on the other hand are on form. So hopefully we can see a fair attacking game from both sides.

Both of them are left-handers, so its forehand to forehand instead of the forehand-backhand when Nadal plays against Federer.
I secretly hope that Verdasco beats him for once, bcuz they have meet against each other for so many times and he has not won a match against him this season! So yeaaa.

Frankly, I actually want Federer to win this thing.

He has won every Grand Slam except for this.
and I was kinda shocked that he beat Nadal on clay just 1 or 2 weeks back.
So, *fingers crossed* that Federer will go all the way to the finals and beat Nadal! =)
Or Djokovic!

If I procastinate in my assignments, this will be the reason why!

The End of Another Fantastic Season

At least for fellow MU fans out there =P

HAHAHA.

I guess it's time to revive my blog a bit, and thank you fellow co-writers for doing so. I'll invite more writers to criticize other football clubs as well. XD

Anyhow, I know it's pretty boring, but I have yet to congratulate MANCHESTER UNITED for their latest addition of league titles in England's footballing top division. Adding total insult to Liverpool, Manchester United's victory equals them to Liverpool's all-time British record of 18 league titles. Whether you like it or not, it is not easy to wrestle the title from the Champions, but nevertheless it is the best Liverpool charge for the league title for nearly a decade.

Now the interesting part comes in. Celebrations are over as the title was already clinched, but now, inspired by StarSport's Football Crazy program, which is the "Asia Decides" program, it is certainly entertaining to analyze why Manchester United are a cut above the rest once again.

Here are the key moments en-route to winning the league:

1) MU's stuttering start to the season

For the second season in a row, MU started horribly wrong in the league, and their defeat at Anfield seemed to signify the shift of power to the Kop-ians. But in the end, does it matter?

2) No it doesn't! thanks to Liverpool's stuttering mid-season!

By the end of November, Liverpool seemed to be in pole position to land their first EPL title for many many years, and with MU's involvement in the Club World Cup and Super Cup, it seems like MU's tasks of chasing Liverpool were made harder as they will play 2 games lesser than them.

But guess what, that did not happen. NEVER a chance. While MU were jubilating in becoming the World Champions for the first time, Liverpool stuttered under pressure as lack of experience haunted them. By the time MU touched down at Old Trafford, Liverpool were only 3-4 points ahead, with 2 games more. With questions of fatigue arising for Sir Alex Ferguson's men, their league fixture against Stoke City right after Japan's victory was certainly tough. But they duly obliged by gaining a precious 1-0 victory, which then kicked off a string of consistent results to knock Liverpool off the top spot.

3) A British record of consecutive clean sheets

As most football fans would enjoy the attacking side of the game, not many of us appreciate the important of team's defensive abilities in laying the foundation for the team to get a victory. And that's what MU did. Keeper Edwin van der Sar achieved a British record of keeping 14 or 15 consecutive clean sheets for the team, in which 90% of them ended up in victories. See?

Personally, i feel though the keeper got acclaimations for the record, it was the defensive partnership of the ice-cool Rio Ferdinand and especially, the particular Serbian, Nemanja Vidic.

Oh before I forget let me mention this.

When the record was achieved, Ferdinand did not play 80% of the matches!

At Ferdinand's absence, Vidic was the key in mastering the defence with his exceptional speed, and yes, his heading abilities. On top of that, MU had a talented cover in the form of Jonny Evans, who took Ferdinand's position and did brilliantly with Vidic.

Indeed a partnership for the future =)

4) The most lethal in the last 15 minutes of a match

MU vs Middlesbrough 1 - 0 (75th min)

MU vs Sunderland 1 - 0 (90th min)

Bolton vs MU 1 - 0 (92nd min)

Arsenal vs MU 2 - 1 (88th min)

MU vs Tottenham 5 - 2(the 5 goals starting from 62nd min)

AND OF COURSE,

5) MU vs Aston Villa

This, perhaps was the most key fixture to United's league triumph. Starting the match with injuries to defenders, which saw Gary Neville (of all players) starting as centreback and more importantly, at the wake of 2 straight losses to Liverpool and Fulham, MU seemed to head for a 3rd consecutive defeat after going 2-1 down at the 60th minute. Fear not, as a legend was born.

The Italian Boy.

HE came on and brought more spice to United's attack, and with Ronaldo pulling back to 2-2 with 8 minutes to go, the stage was made for HIM to score this all-important winning goal. Miraculous enough, at the 93rd minute, HE took a pass from Giggs, another inspired subsitution, made a turn round Villa's defender, and lashed a curler towards goal.

The rest was history.

6) Experience is the key

Yes, you are leading in a game. Yes, you have the players to score goals, but it is experience which tells you what to do to influence and close out games. This is what separates MU from the rest, with players like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

Ryan Giggs, to me was particularly excellent this season. Surpassing more than 800 appearances since his first start decades ago, he excelled in his newfound role of central midfielder as he combined his skill and passing finesse to his game. Remember the match against Chelsea?

And remember the goal against West Ham?

So that is the end of the post. With the season coming to an end, I truly hope Newcastle can survive the relegation battle, as I truly think they are still a good team.

The fight for survival

Newcastle United is a club rich in history but strangely enough, never tasted any major glory in over 40 years. They have one of the largest fan base in the UK and 52,000 loyal Toon Army turn up for their premier league home game consistenly despite not having won any championship in 82 years, FA Cup for 54 years, and never won the league cup.

This weekend, may be their last 90 minutes in top flite football. A big football club with misfiring expensive flops but one big saving grace - Alan Shearer. In all honesty - Newcastle dished out a performance worthy of being relegated - and no surprise if you remembered - they were 12th last season. They collected only 5 points from their last 6 games ( 7 points from last 6 home games and 7 points from last 6 away games) - hardly the kind of form to face Villa with 13 points from the last 6 games. Some how, there's a strange feeling of excitement knowing that there's a possibility of them going down. Its going to be like watching Titanic sink all over again. I guess there's no club too big to be relegated.

I salute Alan Shearer - inheriting Newcastle at a time like this, and maybe, just maybe, a hero like him could steer them into safety.

As much of a Liverpool fan I am, I cant help but to laugh at that picture.

I think Tevez scored an amazing goal against Wigan on Thurs morning.
His backheel goal was absolutely perfect and all my brother and I could do was say...'WOW!'

He's a good player and I think ManU should keep him.

I'm all good if he wanna comes to Liverpool.
He's a good player and he'll make Fergie pissed if he plays for the Kops! Lol.

I dun get why must you make things sound so formal. Lol.
But anyway, you're so darn bias!

Your two 1-0 wins at ManCity and Sunderland are not that convincing!

Especially with the 1-0 win in the 91st minute!
and also the Champion Leagues draw which is 2-2!
Well, to be fair, Liverpool didn play that well either.
SeKen's jinx almost got us, we were still 0-0 to Blackburn at the 69th minute!

But after that, we got it going! =D

On the same topic, people (Rafa and some Liverpool players) said that Robbie Keane a good buy and it wasnt a mistake to get him into the team from his previous club, Tottenham.

If you ask me, I want him out of the team! Sell him with the money we bought him and get a better player!
He hardly score any goals!!! 2 in 15 premier league matches he played!
Which is approximately 10% per match!

Oh well, let the season goes and see how he does.
Maybe he's just like Peter Crouch, where he couldn score any goals in the beginning, and after that.. he began to score!

Arsenal lost 0-2 in the Champions League grp stage which made them 2nd in the table.

Surprisingly, they lost.
I mean, in BPL, that's err..normal.
But not so much in CL.
Ah well, lets just hope that Liverpool wont meet them again in the knockout stages!

and all 4 EPL teams had made it to the knockout stages.
I hope Liverpool make it into the finals this time round!!! *evil grin*

On another note,
I think we have yet to congratulate Mr. Christiano Ronaldo on getting his European Player of the Year Award.

If you ask me, I think he deserves every single bit of the trophy cuz he played so well throughout the whole season and he's such an inspiration not just the ManU team, but also other footie players around the player.

and the bonus?
He's a freaking HOT footballer!!!

and I was watching the Davis Cup highlights.
I know, I know it's like super old.
cuz the finals is like one month ago.

But hey,
I wanna blog about it can or not? =P

Rafael Nadal is just one amazing tennis player.
I realise his shots are so darn powerful.
Ok la, when he plays with Federer or the other high ranked ATP players, its not that obvious cuz the other players are good.

But when he played against players in the Davis Cup, his shots are so darn freaking good.
So fast and so darn sharp!!
Cant wait for the Australian Open to see him and the rest in action!!!!

Sorry for the lack of updates, was damn busy recently. I'll be back active again from now on, especially keeping updated on the latest Premier League results. Thus fair a nail-biting race I would say, as ALREADY written by Claryn &@*&^@*^@&^@#&^@ HAHA.

Two consecutive 1-0 results put MU firmly within the title race, with the latest 1-0 win against Sunderland featuring the new United striker Nemanja Vidic.

He's supposed to be a defender but he scored like Ruud van Nistelrooy LOL.

Right place at the best time.

Thus far I also must compliment Liverpool for their consistency so far this season. They have not played like this for many many years. I just hope that Steven Gerrard does stop playing a few matches, cause that's when Liverpool can't win. XD

Okay lar, I let you post more about football lar.

Football aside, I must take time to congratulate 2 of the most successful sportsmen and sportswomen in the world today.

Firstly, NICOL DAVID.

Again I would like to say, she should deserve more recognition more than anyone else in Malaysia. We have seen enough of Malaysian badminton players flopping at the biggest stages, but to witness a Malaysian winning TEN CONSECUTIVE TITLES on the biggest stages is fantastic. Truly the world number one in squash as not only she set world records, she is always able to maintain her consistency and never looks off-form.

Unlike Lee Chong Wei, the player who always loses the world number two Lin Dan and still is the world number one. -_-

Until now I have no idea why the Olympics do not have squash as one of the sporting events, as if there is, surely a Gold medal will be assured for Malaysia, based on Nicol's consistency.

To be frank, she is the athlete whom I respect the most in Malaysia.

Secondly, Lewis Hamilton.

Long dubbed as the future world-champion in F1 driving, he went close on few occasions before this year to claim as the world's best. Finally this year, he was able to do it albeit at the LAST race of the year, beating Felipe Massa to the number one spot.

What made me respect him was his determination despite what looked like another frustrating year for the young Briton. With the last lap to go at 5th position, he somehow overtook the 4th driver and got the points required to beat Massa by ONE POINT.

If I were to be Massa, I would cry like a baby lol.

Besides, his down-to-earth attitude was another plus point for this driving talent. He does charity, and never gets jealous of others' achievements like our good friend Fernando Alonso -_-

Anyway, I finished my finals last weekend and this is my 1st week of watching football guilt-free!

and I spent the night watching the ManU and ManCity derby match in Ken's place.

So, we got an away win in Marseille with a double from our beloved captain, Steven Gerrard!

Watched the repeat today morning and boy, the 1st goal from him is just absolutely fanstantic!

Even the goalie didn know how to react, he didn think it was a goal!

WE FINALLY GOT OUR FIRST WIN OVER 4 YEARS IN THE LEAGUE!
This is such an important win for Liverpool! Omg!!
(I know most of you are wondering why I'm not blogging about this, how can? Such a big win you know! lol)

Honestly, being a Liverpool fan myself, I thought it was a one-sided match as Gerrard and Torres were not playing! I would be happy if it was a draw.

You know what's worse? It was also Berbatov's debut match in ManU. All eyes were on him, waiting for him to score a goal in Anfield. I already lost hope already la.
Got Berbatov, Carrick.. but dun have Gerrard and Torres! =/

I could still remember, during youth service, most of the ManU fans were making fun at our situation, telling us how confident they were, how they are DEFINITELY gonna win the match! One even told us.. 3-1 Man U! I dun wanna mention names, cuz you were really nice to me when ManU won against Liverpool the last time. But hey, to the rest of you..

Haha. RIGHT AT YOUR FACE!

Ok la, cannot be too cocky bcuz at the 3rd minute of the game, I wanted to cry big time already.
Berbatov crossed the ball for Tevez to score a stunning goal.
At that time, I was just shocked and I buried myself with a pillow.
Julia was practically screaming in denial, while the rest of ManU fans were celebrating!
Oh, we were at Ben's place celebrating lantern festival btw! lol.

That was not funny ok! I was practically shouting in anger for the rest of the 13 minutes scolding them! Haha.
And every minute Cheah and Kane walked in the hall, they would ask.. so, 2-0 already ? 3-0?
Nonsense la they all.

Then, came the time when out of nowhere, Van Der Sar and Brown made a huge mistake doing-dunno-what and we got an own goal from Wes Brown!!!

Liverpool 1-1 Man U!

This is how he looked after he scored the goal for us. Maybe deep down he feels honoured to score such an important goal for Anfield. =P
Who cares if it wasnt a Liverpool player who scored the goal? A goal is STILL a goal!
and that was what mattered! =)

At half time, it was still 1-1. Nothing much happened besides me whacking Kane, Ian and Alvin so hard each time Liverpool almost concede or scores. =p
I confirm no need to get bf if pple see me screaming like this! Lol.

2nd half was way better than the 1st for us. They started to attack consistently, going forward with every opportunity. ManU barely got past the midfield.

Bcuz I was so engrossed with Liverpool attempting to score, I didn look at how bad the ManU's defense was. (ManU fans say so!)
Even Joel said that we had a strong midfield.

I think its bcuz Gerrard came in sometime at the 2nd half that got Liverpool's confidence!

At the 77th minute, after numerous efforts of Liverpool players trying to score a goal, Ryan Babel scored a goal!

GOALLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!

At this point, its Liverpool 2-1 ManU!

Mascherano was the one who dribble past the defenders before passing the ball to Babel for the goal! Apparently it was ManU player's fault at defending bcuz they should have kicked the ball out and concede a corner instead of shielding the ball.

Oh well, what can I say? =)

At the end of 90 minutes, we got the full 3 points to stay alive in the title race! Well done, Liverpool! We deserve this win and we needed this so badly.
Losing to ManU 7 out of 8 times was really demoralising and now, we're back!
It gave us the confidence we really needed and we are gonna fight hard and do whatever it takes to get the trophy!

p.s. Vidic got a red card, so they'll meet Chelsea without him. Terry also got red card, so no terry and no vidic.

The Man Is Back

After months and months of being overshadowed by Rafael Nadal in the world of tennis, Roger Federer, being dethroned by Nadal as number one earlier in the year, roared back with a resounding victory at the US Open.

For a record, it is Federer's fifth straight US Open at Flushing Meadows, with only 4-5 tennis players holding such a record in the tournament's history.

More importantly, it also signified the return of his form.

As quoted by Anthony Suntay from ESPN,

"After realising that the rest of the world had caught up with him, he went out and looked to add to his already intimidating game. He took the losses in stride and looked to improve"

It truly is. I only managed to catch the highlights of the game, but I had witnessed his fantastic backhand shots which is always his trademark in his style of play. Perhaps still one of the best backhander in the world, and perhaps left finalist Andy Murray with no ability to reply as well.

With this victory, he responded perfectly to criticisms saying age has caught up with him, and he no longer has the dominant force in him.

Who says so?

The fact that his slight blip over the tournaments was treated like the end of the world for him by the brutal media coverage, but the truth is, he still has the determination to wrestle the number one spot back from Rafael Nadal. Maybe few of u knew that he has gotten into the top 4 stage for the 18th consecutive time, according to statistics, and not many players are able to do that.

After months and months of speculation surrounding the transfer saga, Man Utd finally got their man in the form of Dimitar Berbatov.

Rather big in size as a striker, he possesses talented skills much to the envy of any other strikers would dream of. A reminiscence of the great Eric Cantona, he has the calmness when he's on the ball, and it's not to easy for defenders to play against him as he can virtually stun you with a shot at goal dead-accurately even when he is in an impossible position.

Absolute means of composure in front of goal, he is blessed with a touch of a classy goal-poacher as well.

I SERIOUSLY can't wait for his debut against Liverpool in the weekend. Trust me, it's gonna be one heck of a game.

Out with the Olympics and In with the US Tennis Open

So, Olympics was officially over last Sunday.
The closing ceremony was nice, but I just didn get the performace by David Beckham.
Like what the crap?! Should at least juggle the ball and do some few tricks la. O_o

Nadal won the 1st round, but in a tough match. I guess he must have been pretty tired from the Olympics.

The Fastest Man On Planet Earth - Twice

When I saw how Usain Bolt, the Jamaican athlete broke TWO world records in the running events which seemed untouchable, I just can't help to think of the famous song sang by Coldplay, Speed of Sound.

The sapu-ation (sorry bit BM-ish) of the 100-200 meters sprinting event was done by him in style.

Imagine, 200 meters in just 19.30 seconds. I would be panting heavily if I can finish in 19 minutes lol.

He beats the world record initially held by American legend Michael Johnson who had 19.32 seconds.

Can you imagine how important 2 seconds are to Bolt? Or any other athletes?

We tend to waste every second given in real life, but for these runners, it meant the world to them, as personal and national pride and glory take place in their quest for success.

My lecturer, George (with the nice ass according to Li San XD) talked about his past as a runner in his university days, and he said the privilege to don the running jersey was a proud moment to him.

It truly is.

Any opportunity to compete for your country is an honour, and Bolt proves why he is a winner despite his poor backgrounds in his native country.

After sharing much of the limelight, the writer is back =P

Today's Malaysian papers' highlight:

Lee Chong Wei, badminton player awarded Datukship in Penang after his heroics in Olmpics

I would pity Nicol David if she feels insulted, as I think she deserves the creditation so much more than Lee Chong Wei, though he got a silver in the Olympics in the singles badminton event.

But I have full faith in Chong Wei, unlike so many other athletes who slumped so badly after doing well in just a few outings.

But as it reminds me, I still feel disappointed after watching Chong Wei losing so tamely to World number one Lin Dan in the final.

It was totally too easy for Lin Dan, whom I think would not expect such an easy match himself.

The score was 21-13,21-8. EIGHT by a world number 2?

Michael, my lecturer always said we are not the one playing in the match so we can't criticize too much, but the truth is, we are not playing there. IT'S CHONG WEI!

Technically, I think Chong Wei has all the big guns inside him and if he is in top form, Lin Dan may lose to him also. But thanks to his fidgetings and nervousness again in a big stage like this, his performance was WAY below par.

I could still remember I was expecting a heck of match 40 minutes before the match when I was still doing FP tutorial. XD I seriously simply did the questions, as I could not concentrate already. My mind is already in the shuttlecock swt.

But it turned out in the end it was a REAL disappointment. It's done and dusted in just merely 40 minutes. The manner in which he lost, was even more saddening. So far away from how he dismantled Sony Kyuncuro in the quarters.

To be fair to him, it was a silver in the end, and maybe he just needs to learn how to handle pressure in the big stage like this, and you don't always get into the final of an Olympics event.

Liu Xiang, the defending champion of 110m hurdles in Athens, is injured.

He's OUT of the event.

Haha, I just gotta emphasize that, cuz its super big upset.

He and Yao Ming are the most adored athletes in China. Not LinDan. Not GuoJingJing.

But Liu Xiang and Yao Ming.

Everyone in China has been waiting for the day to come so that they can see him race and get them a gold medal in the track.

After the win in the Wimbledon, I believe this is the year of success for him.

High-cost Transfers - Good or Bad?

Yes, EVERYONE knows him.

He's grabbing 99.9% of the sporting headlines right now, thanks to his fickle-mindedness of either moving to Real Madrid or staying out at Manchester United.

After such a successful season at MU, it's hard to find a reason why would he want to leave to Real. It there is any, it would be the transfer fee offered by Real.

A WHOPPING 80 PLUS MILLION EUROS (YET TO PLUS HIS WEEKLY WAGES)

I as a MU fan myself, would never think he worths THAT much for a player. Yes he won numerous awards and football trophies last season, but that doesn't make him the world's most expensive player.

Here's the scenario.

Just today, Chelsea rejected an offer for its midfield lynchpin Frank Lampard $7.95 million pounds offered by Inter Milan who just had Jose Mourinho aka "The Special One" as manager.

So if Frank Lampard were to be sold at that price next time, it means

Ronaldo = 11 Lampards? =S

Oh please this is nonsensical. It truly is, based on the nonsensical offers by a lot of football clubs today, who would do anything just to land the world's best players. This trend was used to be set by none other than Real Madrid, who bombed their bank accounts to land just one or two players every year. Now such trend spreads contagiously =S

Now is this scenario good or bad for the integrity of football?

To me, one thing good about all this that it helps to boost the commercial ability of football around the world. No doubt football is a popular sport, but one may forget its origins.

One fine example of a player worth the money is this legend.

Okay never mind the picture. Eric Cantona, a core member of the double-winning MU team back in the early 90's, was transferred from Leeds United to MU for around $1.2 million. To a club like Real Madrid, $1.2 million is like nothing to them, but when they see the goals he scored and skills he was blessed with, I'm not really sure how much they will fork out for this player if Cantona is like Ronaldo's age right now.

At the end of the video, you'll see how much power he can put on the ball lol.

Now the days are gone. The average of the price for an outstanding player like Arshavin, the new Russian revelation in Euro 08, costs easily around $40 million. And very rarely now that you'll find a player like Ryan Giggs who can stay at MU for as long as 13 years.

Tennis at its best - Wimbledon 2008!

I was never a tennis fanatic until I started watching Wimbledon last year.
It was also the time when I started supporting my all time favourite tennis player.

But yesterday, the Wimbledon men singles final 2008 was one of the best match ever in tennis!

Like crazy ok. It was as nerve-wrecking as watching Liverpool play in CL or Spain playing in finals for Euro 2008!

It was no surprise when the top 2 players in the world was battling it out for the trophy!

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
The King of Grass and King of Clay respectively.
One from Switzerland and the other from Spain. (spain is gonna be where i get my future husband from! ahaha..)

ANYWAY,

it started out well for Rafael Nadal when he took the first set. 6-4.
Federer was not even convincing. He was outplayed.
Nadal had all the power shots.

Look wei. Look at how much power he puts in a shot.

Haha. Somehow I find this shot super funny. Look at his eyes!

I tell you. The only thing that Nadal lacks is the number of aces compared to Federer.
I think Federer has about 16-20 aces, just like that.
Which means its about 4-5 games?
Federer is just so good in serving!!!!!!!

Nevertheless, Federer is the number one and he is not called the world number one for no reason.

He was 2 sets down. He was under tremendous pressure in the 3rd set.
Usually, when ur are 2 sets down, its CONFIRM that you're losing.
There's no way you can come back (very unlikely), except for the Murray and Gasquet's match.
He managed to get 2 sets thru tie-break!!
Nadal was this close to the championship point in the 4th set!

They battled it out till the 5th set wei!! and the score was 9-7 or something!!!
OMG!
Its crazy ok!
Federer was so close in retaining his title, and Nadal was even closer in getting his first Wimbledon title.

I'm so happy for Nadal because he truly deserves it.

He even ran up to thanked Prince Felippe of Spain.
That prince was also in the Euro 2008 semi finals!
What a good prince! So nice go support.
I also wanna marry the next-in-line prince. I hope he's like 20 something! HAHAHAAAAA!
Spain is just such a special country. Haha.
But Nadal not that good looking compared to Torres, dont you think? *so outta topic* lol.

Anyway,

It was huge disappointment for Federer and heaven for Nadal.
I was kinda sad for Federer bcuz he could get 6 consecutive wins in Wimbledon which beats the record of Bjorn Borg.
I wanted him to win it this year and let Nadal wins the next few years!
Oh well.

Congratulations Nadal, you deserve this!
Like what Ronnie said, its SPAIN's year and they are awesome wei!
First the Euro 2008 and now the Wimbledon 2008.
Mind you, its not always they get victories like these. I hope this is the beginning of many other victories to come.

A New Epic

A new era has begin at the Wimbledon tennis championships, and it seems like no one can stop the relentless march of this young Spaniard.

After few rounds of gruelling matches marred by injuries, Nadal reached the final to meet the once again on-form Roger Federer, the world's number one tennis player. They have met countless times in a tournament final, and although Nadal has the upper-hand in head-to-head records, Federer is still the undisputed King of Grass, having won 5 straight Wimbledon championships prior to this year's final.

A classic final.

Both players are vying for different records to break. Federer aims to be the first man in Wimbledon history to win 6 times in a row, while Nadal aims to become the second man in history to win the French Open and Wimbledon championship in the same calendar year after Bjorn Borg.

It was the best Wimbledon final in the tournament's history as both men served up world-class shots during the match despite playing for more than 4 hours, making it the longest final ever at Wimbledon. Nadal seemed too good for Federer as he wrapped up the first two sets, but Federer, never wanting to let go the trophy, stormed back as he took the last two sets into tie-break.

But it stil wasn't enough to stop Nadal from claiming his first Wimbledon title, putting a stop to Federer's supremacy in the tournament.

Being the first Spaniard as well to win the title, he was understandably jubilant, but not forgetting to heap praise and sympathy for Federer who also played well to fight back.

Perhaps, the time's changed.

Over the year, Nadal has improved tremendously as demonstrated over his win in the French Open few months ago, dethraling Federer with ease in the final. Blessed with the talents, his strength and strong serves made life difficult for Federer. Although Federer's backhand worked wonders, it still wasn't enough to match the pace of the Spaniard.

Once again, congratulations to Nadal though I rooted for Federer as I thought Nadal still lacks the things to become a complete player. Not anymore =)

It's been a good year for Spain, and it truly is.

Have been super busy lately and I dun even have time to blog wei.
But, I've been quite rajin catching up on the Wimbledon matches.

It's coming to an end though. The women singles finals is tmr and the day after tmr is the men singles!

I have to say that there are pretty a lot of upsets in this yr's Wimbledon.
All the top seeds women singles are all out even b4 quarter-finals.
Sharapova. Inanovic. Jankovic.

The wildcard Zheng Jie was pretty amazing. The first Asian female (unseeded somemore) to reach the semi-finals!
It was nice watching her play, unfortunately she went down to Serena.

BUT!!

The Dream Finals is still here.

Rafael Nadal v Roger Federer

His biceps giler big ok. Super turn on. Hahha..

Super charming. Haha.

They say that Nadal is gonna win the title this yr after 5 consecutive wins for Federer.
His record is now the same as Bjorn Borg.
That's why I want him to win this thing this year and then Nadal should win next year!!!

Let him break record first ma. Right? =D

But both men played so well! I have to say Nadal is so good, unforced errors giler sikit compared to Federer.

I cant wait for the finals wei!!!
It's gonna be nerve-wrecking. Hehe.

p.s. Andy Murray's match against Richard Gasquet was the bomb wei. Super comeback! =D
